A Life Well-Lived

Born on May 27, 1931, in Detroit, Michigan, Joe was raised in a family that valued hard work and dedication. After graduating high school in 1949, he served in the United States Army as a demolition engineer, a role that showcased his knack for construction and repair. His time in the military laid the groundwork for what would become a lifelong passion for home remodeling and DIY projects.

In 1958, he married Barbara Ann Weiss. Their 55 years together were filled with love, laughter, and family adventures until her passing. The couple started a family in St. Claire Shores and later moved to a small farm in Fostoria, where their lives were enriched by nature and the outdoors.

A Jack of All Trades

Joe’s 35-year tenure as a tool and die maker at General Motors was just one aspect of his diverse skill set. He was a talented handyman, known for his ability to tackle anything from home improvement projects to engine repairs. If it needed fixing, Joe was the neighborhood go-to guy! His hobbies extended beyond home renovation; he enjoyed crafting fishing tackle, indulging in hunting, camping, and fishing.

Fostoria locals remember Joe fondly as he spent countless weekends at his property in Benzonia, where he loved fishing for salmon and walleye in the lovely waters of Lake Michigan. With several boats docked and ready for adventure, Joe fostered a love for fishing in his family, showing them the importance of patience and appreciation for nature.

Through it all, Joe held tight to family values. He raised his children—Amy, Joseph, Susan, and Mary—in an environment filled with curiosity, honesty, and kindness. Those values he instilled continue to shine through in his children and grandchildren. Survived by six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Joe’s legacy will undoubtedly live on for generations to come.

Community Farewell

As the community gathers to celebrate Joe’s life, they will have a chance to reflect, share stories, and say their goodbyes. Visitation is set for February 16, 2025, from 12-4 p.m. at Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Lapeer. A rosary will be prayed at 3 p.m., officiated by Deacon Peter Lynch, followed by the funeral service on February 17, 2025. The family welcomes friends from 10 a.m. until the service begins at 11 a.m. with military honors courtesy of the American Legion Post #16 Honor Guard.

In accordance with Joe’s wishes, cremation will take place after services. Those wishing to honor his memory can contribute to organizations such as Tight Lines for Troops or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

The family encourages everyone to leave their condolences and cherish the many memories they have of this remarkable man. Joe Weishaar may be gone, but his impact on the community will forever remain etched in their hearts.
