Major Bridge Replacement Project Begins in Livonia

News Summary

Livonia residents should prepare for significant roadwork as the Michigan Department of Transportation initiates a major bridge replacement project starting January 6, 2025. The project will involve replacing the M-14 bridge over the Middle Rouge River and the Edward Hines Drive bridge over Ann Arbor Road. These closures will lead to detours and potential delays as alternate routes are established. The improvements aim to enhance infrastructure for better traffic flow, with completion expected by late 2025. Stay tuned for updates and plan your travels accordingly during this extensive construction period.

Big Changes Coming to Livonia Roads in 2025!

Get ready, Livonia! We have some important news regarding Ann Arbor Road and Edward Hines Drive. Starting in January 2025, these major thoroughfares will see significant bridge reconstruction that will impact traffic for the next couple of years. But don’t worry; we’re here to help you navigate through these upcoming changes!

What to Expect

First on the agenda is a stretch of Old M-14, also known as Ann Arbor Road, which will be closed between Newburgh Road and Market Street, just west of Levan Road. This closure will start early on January 6, 2025, at 6 a.m. That’s right around the corner! The state is replacing the bridge over the Middle Rouge River, which has been standing since 1925. Yes, you read that right – nearly a century!

In addition to this, the bridge on Edward Hines Drive over Ann Arbor Road, which dates back to 1948, will also be getting a makeover! This reconstruction isn’t just about the bridges themselves; it also includes rebuilding intersections and updating traffic signals to improve overall traffic flow. Just think of it as a major refresh for our beloved roads.

Detours Ahead

So, how will this affect your daily commute? Starting January 6, drivers heading east on Ann Arbor Road will need to take a detour north on Newburgh Road before making their way east on Plymouth Road. Meanwhile, those heading west will find a different route, taking westbound Plymouth Road, south on Newburgh Road, and then back to westbound Ann Arbor Road. It’s a bit of a roundabout way, but it should keep the flow going smoothly!

Edward Hines Drive to Shut Down in Spring

Mark your calendars! As spring rolls in, Edward Hines Drive will close as well. Work will begin there to tackle the bridge renovations that include demolishing the current structure and rebuilding it entirely. Not only that, but the shared-use path and the pavement leading up to the bridge will also be redone to ensure a safe experience for everyone.

During construction, a temporary bridge will be available for pedestrians on the shared-use path, so joggers, bikers, and walkers don’t need to worry about disruptions to their routines!

Join the Detour Party!

If you’re planning to drive on Edward Hines Drive during that time, here’s the scoop on the traffic detour: Eastbound traffic will be redirected to go north on Newburgh Road, then east on the Ann Arbor/Plymouth Road. From there, you’ll head south on Farmington Road and west on Joy Road to get back to eastbound Edward Hines Drive. For those heading west, the detour will route you east on Joy Road, north on Farmington Road, west on Ann Arbor/Plymouth Road, and finally south on Jughandle Road to return to westbound Edward Hines Drive. Quite the adventure, isn’t it?

Stay Tuned for More Updates

And that’s not all, folks! Later in 2025, even more work is planned for the intersections of Ann Arbor Road with Newburgh and Plymouth roads. This will involve even further rebuilding and some much-needed traffic signal updates.

In summary, while it may be a bit of a hassle initially, these upgrades promise to benefit everyone in the long run. So buckle up, Livonia – the next couple of years are going to be transformative for our roadways. Stay informed, stay safe, and get ready to embrace the changes that await us!
